Chinese New Year at New City

This week the whole school was involved in celebrating Chinese New Year festival. At our school, children have been learning Mandarin for 4 years now. We have organised many cultural events throughout these years such as martial arts performances, Chinese dancing and singing. This year we wanted our children  to take a leading role in this festival. In Design and Technology, children cooked traditional Chinese dumplings from a recipe exchanged from a Chinese school.

Children discovered more about Chinese culture by researching the Chinese New Year festival, observing Chinese artists (dance, martial arts, singing and a Chinese opera style performance) from the Confucius Institute and leading an assembly. In English, they read more about Chinese traditions through comprehension. In art, children created displays through different mediums.

These activities allowed children to experience the language and culture in an authentic context.
