Newham Chinese Association Cultural Workshop

Year 6 participated in a workshop put on by the Newham Chinese Association. They discovered that there is a large Chinese community within Newham; about 6000 Chinese people. The NCA chairman, (known as Uncle Gary) told his story about immigrating to England from Hong Kong in 1988. He spoke in Chinese and his wife translated into English so we could understand. He overcame obstacles to achieve his goals and encouraged the children to do the same by working hard and never giving up, as well as giving back to the community. The children gained an appreciation for Chinese culture, listening to musicians from the Chinese Opera play the erhu (二胡), a two-string instrument and some children got to play it! Finally, the year 6 children watched a traditional Lion dance and were able to dance along in the lion costume.
