Music

At New City, we aim to deliver a high-quality music curriculum which inspires and enriches pupils to fulfil their musical potential. This begins at their first exploration of sounds at a young age and develops through singing, playing, listening and composing. We want our children to develop a lifelong appreciation for a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn from a range of different cultures. We believe all children deserve to be given the chance to explore and compose music from a rich variety of cultures.

Music lessons are delivered by a specialist music teacher who works alongside class teachers each week. As the children progress through the school, they are given the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and understanding of musical concepts through playing the following instruments:

EYFS – classroom percussion
Key Stage 1 – untuned and tuned percussion
Year 3 – ukulele
Year 4 – recorder
Year 5 – brass
Year 6 – brass

In addition to our curriculum, we have 4 whole school shows per year for the children to showcase their learning and year 6 perform a musical as their final primary performance.

After school, we run a choir (Wednesdays) and a ukulele club (Thursdays). These groups rehearse weekly leading up to performances both in and out of school, including an annual trip to the O2 Arena with the choir to perform as part of Young Voices.
